Protecting Your Children from Sexual Predators

Author: Leigh Baker

Predators are everywhere and they can strike at any time-- and they come in all shapes and sizes. More than 1.2 million families will report child sexual abuse by the end of this year. Research suggests that many hundreds of thousands more boys and girls from all backgrounds and of all ages may experience abuse that is not reported. To keep your family from becoming part of these frightening statistics, you must read this invaluable book.

Protecting Your Children from Sexual Predators details everything you need to know and everything you need to do to keep your child safe. You will learn how to identify potential sexual predators, how to recognize the signs of the grooming behaviors that come before the actual act of sexual abuse, and how to arm your children with the necessary skills to prevent abuse.

Sexual predators commit the most heinous acts against the more defenseless members of our society. They often are disguised as harmless and caring people; they may interact with your children as their baby-sitters, youth group leaders, clergy, teachers, coaches, neighbors, medical professionals, and family members. What these predators hold in common is their ability to earn the trust of both the children they attack and their parents. In Protecting Your Children from Sexual Predators, Dr. Leigh Baker gives you the unique opportunity to meet these predators up close and to examine:

* The ten most common characteristics they display, such as refusal to take responsibility for their actions, sense of entitlement, and the need for power and control.
* How they lead their victims through the five stages of sexual abuse.
* The four types ofpersonalities they commonly exhibit.
* How female sexual predators can gain access to your child.
* The ways that juveniles offend against other children.
* How sexual predators travel the Internet and the many ways that they can harm your child through cyberspace.
* How baby-sitting can pose a danger to your child if you don't take the necessary steps to ensure safety.
* How to use the sex offender registry to prevent known predators from gaining access to your child.

By allowing parents to identify sexual predators before their children are harmed, Dr. Baker takes the battle to end sexual abuse to the only front where it can ever truly be won: the home front.

Cloe Madanes

This book is very important; it is a 'must read' for every parent, teacher, and therapist.

Marianne Neifert

Highly informative and empowering...you will be armed with the necessary knowledge to protect your child from harm.

Steven W. Litt

This...informative new book offers a thorough and compelling resource for families and those who work with them.

Library Journal

The general wariness of most Americans has greatly increased in recent months, but the fear of kidnapping and child abuse has always been strong. This straightforward, enlightening, but remarkably nonalarmist book should bring a sense of empowerment to concerned parents. Baker, a clinician with a doctorate in psychology, founder of the Trauma Treatment Center of Colorado, and author of When Your Child's Been Abused: A Parent Handbook, presents a list of the ten common characteristics of sexual predators and the five stages of abusive relationships. She then applies such constructs to various categories of abusers, including pedophiles and other male predators, female predators, sexually abusive youths, and sibling abusers. Clear chapters include an overview, case studies drawn from interviews, and conclusions regarding detection and prevention (e.g., safe baby-sitting rules). Cybersex, the treatment for sexual offenders, and legal resources such as sex-offender registries are also discussed. Few print resources are cited, but Internet sites and practical advice are stressed. The information here may also apply to predators who victimize vulnerable adults. Highly recommended for public libraries. Antoinette Brinkman, Evansville, IN Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Your Health: A Corrective System of Exercising that Revolutionizes the Entire Field of Physical Education

Author: Joseph Hubertus Pilates

First published in 1934, this new reprint of Your Health includes Joseph Pilates’ early Twentieth Century philosophies, principles, and theories about health and fitness. He bases his work on the concept of a balanced body and mind, drawing on the approach espoused by the early Greeks. While some of his personal philosophies reflected early 20th Century viewpoints, his athletic and fitness doctrines were years ahead of his time. Readers will learn his observations and conclusions about people's approach to physical fitness. He describes the results of decades of scientific study, experimentation and research into the variety of troubles and ills that upset the balance of body and mind. Pilates makes extraordinary claims about the benefits of his defined science of "Contrology" and very specifically defines this science for all to read and understand. In this book, he exemplifies and clarifies the beneficial impact of his work.

Bone Building Body Shaping Workout or Yoga for Every Body

Bone Building, Body-Shaping Workout

Author: Joyce L Vedral

Get the "double whammy" of a sexy, tight-toned body and strong healthy bones for a time-investment of either eight minutes a day (the minimum plan) sixteen minutes a day (the regular plan) or 32 minutes a day (the maximum plan!) How can working out with even light weights (you can start using weights as light as 1,2 and 3 pounds) build bone? Bone is attached to muscle, and as the muscle is exercised, the blood circulates through the muscle and the bone to which it is attached, sending electrical charges through the bone, and nutrients. The bone is made more dense. You can not only prevent osteoporosis, but reverse it at any age. My bone density is now more than double women my age (DEXA). I have the bones of a 30 year old. The diet is balanced and helps you to lose weight while eating the right amount of calcium. One example is in order. The most common fracture area for women is said to be the hip. But in reality, that area is the upper thighbone. To prevent fracture you work the front and back thigh muscle. What do you get? A sexy front thigh and back thigh and strong healthy bones. This book hits every bone in the body, in the order of most vulnerable, with the concomitant muscles.

Book review: The Path to Power or Firecracker Boys

The Physician's Covenant: Images of the Healer in Medical Ethics

Author: William F May

In this updated edition of a classic text, May presents the overarching images that shape the convictions and daily practice of the physician. Instead of using the typical procedures and quandaries that are the focal points of many books on ethics, he explores how the moral power of these images aid in understanding the healer and in defining his or her tasks. In this volume May updates his reflections on the five images of the healer: parent, fighter, technician, teacher, and covenanter. This edition also contains new material on the ethics of access to health care, genetic technologies, and physician-assisted suicide.

At a time when medical professionals are questioning their own roles, May supports ethical understanding based on moral reflection. His use of these images helps shape and order experience, presenting the practitioner with imperatives by which to live. This book will challenge physicians, students, and teachers of medical ethics to reach a deeper understanding of the physician's place in society.

Fit to Lead: The Proven 8-Week Solution for Shaping Up Your Body, Your Mind, and Your Career

Author: Christopher P Neck

Praise for Fit to Lead"If you want to get more out of life and lead others to do the same, I strongly recommend that you read this book."--Kenneth H. Cooper, M.D., M.P.H., "the father of aerobics" and author of Faith-Based Fitness, from the foreword"Fit to Lead hits the nail right on the head. So many young men and women in their thirties and forties are pushing to succeed and forgetting about their body development. The end result is of course that when they get into their fifties and sixties they are unable to perform at their peak level because they haven't looked after their bodies. This book can help solve the problem, if you take it to heart and put it into action. I thoroughly recommend it."--Dr. Peter J. Daniels, founder and president of the World Centre for Entrepreneurial Studies"The best fitness book I've ever read. Fit To Lead can help the busiest person achieve their fitness goals". --Chuck Norris, Actor

Publishers Weekly

As more people search for helpful hints on how to get and stay in shape, these authors offer their blueprint for success, a formula that's been used by hundreds of prominent figures, including President Bush. They base their philosophy on a quote from President John F. Kennedy: "Physical fitness is the basis for all other forms of excellence." The authors have extensive knowledge of the subject: Neck is a management professor, Mitchell served on Bush's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Manz is a consultant and author and Thompson teaches a course on fitness for executives. While most of their material is meant to inspire people to start exercising, change their diet and overhaul their mind (using mental imagery and self-observation), their underlying message is that if readers get their bodies into shape, their minds will soon follow. And when their minds are sharper, they become stronger leaders. The copious examples of both individuals and companies who have answered the "fit to lead" challenge validate the book's basic premise (e.g., the founder of Domino's Pizza runs four miles a day; Columbia/HCA Healthcare's CEO uses time between flights to jog around airports). Procrastinators will especially benefit from the chapter "No More Excuses," where the authors give rebuttals for every possible exercise excuse. Even the busiest executive who claims she or he has no time to exercise will find a way to change lifestyle here, and while the book is geared towards business executives, workers of all stripes will find it rewarding. (May) Forecast: St. Martin's will send the authors on a seven-city tour to promote the book. That exposure, along with national broadcast, radio and print publicity, may yield strong sales. Healing Myths, Healing Magic: Breaking the Spell of Old Illusion - Reclaiming Our Power to Heal

Author: Donald M Epstein

Even as healthcare technology makes great strides, studies show that the attitude of a person suffering from chronic illness may hold the most sway over the healing process. This book shows that the first step in adopting a positive attitude toward health lies in dismissing harmful myths. "I must forgive before I can heal." "I am sick because God is punishing me." "If it doesn't feel good, it must be an effective medicine." These are outdated concepts that can slow healing -- or make an illness worse. Donald Epstein divides these myths into four categories: social, biomedical, religious/spiritual, and New Age. He discusses each myth individually -- from "healing is expensive" to "every condition can be traced to a demonstrable physical cause" -- and offers replacement myths, or "Healing Magic," to be both meditated upon and declared out loud by the reader in order to create an opportunity for healing.

The Anatomy of Hope: How Patients Prevail in the Face of Illness

Author: Jerome Groopman

An inspiring and profoundly enlightening exploration of one doctor’s discovery of how hope can change
the course of illness

Since the time of the ancient Greeks, human beings have believed that hope is essential to life. Now, in this groundbreaking book, Harvard Medical School professor and New Yorker staff writer Jerome Groopman shows us why.

The search for hope is most urgent at the patient’s bedside. The Anatomy of Hope takes us there, bringing us into the lives of people at pivotal moments when they reach for and find hope--or when it eludes their grasp. Through these intimate portraits, we learn how to distinguish true hope from false, why some people feel they are undeserving of it, and whether we should ever abandon our search.

Can hope contribute to recovery by changing physical well-being? To answer this hotly debated question, Groopman embarked on an investigative journey to cutting-edge laboratories where researchers are unraveling an authentic biology of hope. There he finds a scientific basis for understanding the role of this vital emotion in the outcome of illness.

Here is a book that offers a new way of thinking about hope, with a message for all readers, not only patients and their families. "We are just beginning to appreciate hope’s reach," Groopman writes, "and have not defined its limits. I see hope as the very heart of healing."

The New York Times

If there is an ''anatomy'' here, it isn't an archetypal, unitary anatomy. Instead, hope turns out to be something negotiated between patients and physicians, imagined and reimagined at every visit. Oncologists need to rely on an incredible team of specialists: palliative-care physicians, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists. Even so, the day-to-day practice of oncology is routinely humbled by the task. In its most introspective passages, Groopman's book manages to convey the perverse subtleties of these negotiations: Dan has to be tricked into hope; for Eva, hope becomes a joke that she snickers at, but never quite gets. In the end, you might not know how to define hope precisely - but that seems to be the point. Groopman succeeds principally because he refuses to offer a simple, easily digestible thesis. — Siddhartha Mukherjee

The Washington Post

Groopman writes with profound compassion. The kind of hope -- the kind of love -- that shines through this book's pages could have saved a cardiac patient like my father who, despising doctors and distrusting their motives, chose to die when his heart failed, rather than submit to surgery. It will undoubtedly save many other patients and their families. In body and in spirit. — Judith Warner

Publishers Weekly

In this provocative book, New Yorker staff writer and Harvard Medical School professor Groopman (Second Opinions; The Measure of Our Days) explores the way hope affects one's capacity to cope with serious illness. Drawing on his 30-year career in hematology and oncology, Groopman presents stories based on his patients and his own debilitating back injury. Through these moving if somewhat one-dimensional portraits, he reveals the role of memory, family and faith in hope and how they can influence healing by affecting treatment decisions and resilience. Sharing his own blunders and successes, Groopman underscores the power doctors and other health care providers have to instill or kill hope. He also explains that hope can be fostered without glossing over medical realities: "Hope... does not cast a veil over perception and thought. In this way, it is different from blind optimism: It brings reality into sharp focus." In the final chapters of the book, Groopman examines the existing science behind the mind-body connection by reviewing, for example, remarkable studies on the placebo effect. By the end of the book, Groopman successfully convinces that hope can offer not only solace but strength to those living with medical uncertainty. (Jan.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Readers wary of the "miraculous recovery" genre need not pass on Groopman's latest book (after The Measure of Our Days; Second Opinions). Despite its title, the text contains a satisfyingly gritty realism-in fact, Groopman's first four case studies end in death. That, in itself, quickly drew this reviewer into subsequent chapters in which the author develops the concepts of hope and choice and pursues both his personal interest in and his professional quest for their biological effects. Chair of medicine at Harvard and staff writer in medicine and biology for The New Yorker, Groopman investigates recent research detailing the effects of placebos, emotion, and belief on the nervous system. He finds that hope can begin a domino effect that neither patient nor health provider can predict. In comparison, Dr. Howard Spiro, in The Power of Hope, focuses on placebo history and research and its place in the context of other alternative remedies. Excelling in narrative, The Anatomy of Hope is strongly recommended for most public libraries. [Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 9/1/03.]-Andy Wickens, King Cty. Lib. Kirkus Reviews

Doctor/author Groopman (Second Opinions, 2000, etc.) insightfully examines the nature of hope and the role it plays in recovery from illness. Stories from his medical education and 30 years of practice reveal what New Yorker staff writer Groopman (Medicine/Harvard) has learned about the connections between hope and illness. He was still in medical school when an Orthodox Jewish woman confided in him that she believed her cancer was a punishment from God. "Well prepared for the science [but] pitifully unprepared for the soul," Groopman was unable to reach out and give her the hope she needed to pursue a course of therapy. Then, as a young resident, he followed an older doctor's lead in offering false hope to a terminally ill woman, a disturbing experience that subsequently led him to veer too far in the direction of hope-crushing cold facts as a specialist in oncology and hematology. Perhaps the most powerful story Groopman tells is about a professor of pathology who, in full possession of all the grim facts about his stomach cancer, nevertheless held onto hope, persisted in excruciating therapy, and survived. From his patients, the author observed that hope is at the very heart of healing, whether it derives from faith in God and belief in an afterlife or from a personal philosophy that gives meaning to life and mortality. The author's personal experience of pain, frustration, and despair was also instructive. After suffering severe back pain for 19 years, Groopman followed the advice of a physician to seek relief by changing his beliefs about pain and acting on those new beliefs. Experiencing for himself the physical changes caused by regained hope, he began to question neurologists, experimental psychologists, and others about the biology of hope. He relates their discoveries here, going on to consider why some people can sustain hope but others cannot and clearly delineating the difference between false hope and true hope. A thoughtful message, movingly yet unsentimentally presented by a physician alert to medicine's human as well as its scientific side. Agent: Suzanne Gluck/William Morris

Ancient Healing for Modern Women or The Mold Survival Guide

Ancient Healing for Modern Women: Traditional Chinese Medicine for All Phases of a Woman's Life

Author: Xiolan Zhao

One of Canada's most trusted and beloved health practitioners introduces American women to the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine and the time-tested practices that have helped optimize physical and emotional health for centuries.

Since establishing her practice in Canada twelve years ago, Dr. Xiaolan Zhao has treated thousands of women suffering from fatigue, PMS, infertility, depression, cancer, menopausal symptoms and other gynecological disorders — health problems that are all too common in the West but less so in China, where traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been an integral part of women's lives for thousands of years. As a physician originally trained in Western medicine who later took up the practice of TCM, Dr. Zhao has seen how effective the Chinese approach is for her patients, and her book will help American women incorporate its wisdom and practices in our lives.

Sharing stories from her own life and the lives of her patients, Dr. Zhao shows that we have nothing to reject about our feminine selves, and explains how we can develop new relationships with our bodies and our emotions. There is so much every woman can do in terms of ongoing and preventative self-care to improve her health and vitality and prevent illness. By making simple changes in diet, exercise routine, sex life and the way we deal with stress and our emotions, we can profoundly improve our health now and into the future.

Publishers Weekly

In this introduction to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Zhao poetically evokes naturalistic imagery to celebrate women's life stages: menstruation (Heavenly Water), breast health (Lotus Blossoms), sexuality (Clouds and Rain), pregnancy (Ripening the Fruit), postpartum (Golden Month) and menopause (Second Spring). TCM, she says, empowers a woman with self-awareness, providing the means to access her own healing power. Raised in China during the Cultural Revolution, Zhao encountered folk medicine on the farm to which she was relocated. When she later studied medicine in her homeland, her training emphasized physical illness and symptoms. After emigrating to Canada and opening her own clinic, she noted that many women patients struggled with mental, emotional and spiritual imbalances that affected their health. With TCM-acupuncture, herbs, diet, stress relief and rest, massage-Zhao says, women can remedy imbalances on all levels and avoid more serious illness, surgery and prescription medication. Her recommendations alternate with heartfelt personal stories. While she discusses the Taoist basis of TCM and the concepts of qi and yin and yang, the book functions more as an appetizer. Still, Zhao's warmth and gentle touch will likely entice readers to seek a TCM practitioner for further guidance. (Feb.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

In her first book for an American audience, Toronto-based Zhao explains for women the principles and benefits of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). A good many concepts are discussed, from the three levels of energy (Jing, Qi, and Shen) to the five basic phases (wood, fire, earth, metal, and water). What's important, Zhao says, is the restoration of harmony in the body through certain elements-only then can optimum health result. The author (who earned a degree in traditional medicine in her native China) shares personal stories and patient vignettes of each stage of a woman's life using TCM terms and examines them through the lens of TCM. For each stage, recipes and exercises for helping to balance Qi are provided. While it was probably not in the scope of the book to explain TCM concepts and terms in detail, suggestions of sources for further study would have been helpful. Laurie Steelsmith's Natural Choices for Women's Health: How the Secrets of Natural and Chinese Medicine Can Create a Lifetime of Wellness provides more substance. However, Zhao's book is recommended for public and consumer health libraries with large collections in alternative medicine.-Beth Hill, Univ. of Idaho Lib., Moscow Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

The Mold Survival Guide: For Your Home and for Your Health

Author: Jeffrey C May

The image was shocking: a couple wearing protective suits and masks in their own home! The accompanying USA Weekend story documented the mold-related headaches, fatigue, and respiratory problems that forced Melinda Ballard and Ron Allison to abandon their dream house, leaving all their possessions behind. Another family was so terrified that they had their mold-filled house torn down.

Mold growth threatens property managers and builders, as well as home owners and renters. Legal settlements in some mold cases have reached the millions, and home insurance rates are skyrocketing. Some people argue that mold concerns are exaggerated; others are convinced that mold growth is destroying their health.

In The Mold Survival Guide, a prominent indoor air quality professional teams up with a writing specialist to describe mold, to explain where and why it flourishes in homes, and to offer advice on how to eradicate mold while minimizing health risks. The book includes a chapter by two physicians who explain how exposure to mold can affect health.

With clear scientific explanations and expert advice, The Mold Survival Guide is a valuable resource for anyone worried about a common household problem that can have serious consequences.

Library Journal

A problem facing homeowners everywhere, mold can form in basements, attics, living rooms, bedrooms, walls, ceilings, floors, and heating and cooling systems, both inside and outside of the house. The resulting discoloration and musty odor can not only lower property values and destroy a home's ambience but also cause serious illness, allergy, and headaches. May, a certified indoor air-quality professional (see his excellent book on indoor allergens, My House Is Killing Me!), and wife Connie explain what molds are, why and where they grow, and how to rid our living spaces of these dangerous fungal microorganisms. The authors furnish clear explanations, examples from actual situations, and valuable advice gleaned from May's 15 years' experience. A guest chapter by two physicians reveals how prolonged exposure to molds affects our health. A storehouse of knowledge presented in a readable style, this will appeal to homeowners, apartment dwellers, and real estate agents alike.-Irwin Weintraub, Brooklyn Coll. From Binge to Blackout or Your Pregnancy Day by Day

From Binge to Blackout: A Mother and Son Struggle With Teen Drinking

Author: Chris Volkmann

ALCOHOL: The number one drug of choice for America's youth.

Throughout his college years, Toren Volkmann partied like there was no tomorrow. And like so many parents, his mother, Chris, overlooked Toren's growing alcohol problem. But when he graduated, Toren realized that he had become a full-blown alcoholic with a college diploma.

Written from the viewpoints of both mother and son, this is a riveting, enlightening, and heartbreakingly true story of a family that was able to confront the fear, pain, and denial that threatened to destroy them-and survive the epidemic of teenage drinking that is putting America's future at risk.

New York Times

From Binge to Blackout: a Mother and Son Struggle with Teen Drinking is an especially gripping cautionary tale on this subject. And it is unusual in that it does not follow the standard story template, from downfall to miracle cure. Instead this account is divided between two narrators: Toren Volkmann, who slid with scary ease from fun-loving party guy to desperate alcoholic, and Chris Volkmann, his mother, who bought Toren's assurances that he was fine. He had a secret, and she hadn't a clue.

Pressured Parents Stressed out Kids or Exercises for Arthritis

Pressured Parents, Stressed-Out Kids: Dealing with Competition While Raising a Successful Child

    Author: Wendy S Grolnick

It begins harmlessly. Parents casually chatting on the playground or over dinner compare their babies' first milestones: "Has Erin started talking? Danielle's already using five-word sentences!" Inevitably, Erin's mom and dad feel anxious. Later, as report cards, standardized tests, tryouts, playoffs, auditions, admission interviews, and social cliques fill their child's world, parents' anxiety intensifies. The older children get, the more competition they face, whether in sports, academics or the arts. Hovering in the background, inciting everyone, is the race for admission to a top-tier college.
To help panicky parents deal with the torrential emotions stirred up by our competitive society, and to give them scientific knowledge about their children's growing years, leading child researcher Wendy Grolnick and educational and parenting journalist Kathy Seal offer this illuminating and accessible guide to channeling competitive anxiety into positive parenting. While evolution has given parents a genetic predisposition toward this protective anxiety whenever their children face today's heightened competition, the authors guide parents to avoid pushing and pressuring, turning their fear instead into calm guidance.
Distilling the results of thirty years of research in child psychology, the authors focus on three essential feelings-autonomy, competence, and connectedness-which parents can foster in their children to maximize the child's chances of success and minimize family conflict. They explain that granting kids autonomy lets them feel that they can solve their own problems and are responsible for their own actions. At the same time, providing structure gives kids theguidelines, information, limits, and consequences that they need to act in the world, instilling them with a feeling of competence. Finally, support from adults in the form of time and other resources provides children with a necessary feeling of connection and helps them internalize the ideas and values of their caring parents.
Reassuring and empathic, Grolnick and Seal show parents how to avoid the burn-out-in both parents and children-that afflicts so many in our highly competitive society, while raising children who thrive and excel.

    Publishers Weekly

Parents today suffer from what Grolnick and Seal call "Pressured Parent Phenomenon," constant anxiety over whether our children are as competitive as they could be. Both Grolnick, a professor of psychology at Clark University, and Seal, coauthor of Motivated Minds, are parents themselves, so they speak from both their own experiences and from research. Experiments have confirmed that competitive pressure actually dampens a child's motivation. But the authors say parents are biologically hardwired to pressure children because we know "that the more competent our children are, the more likely they will pass on our genes." Plus, we have huge "ego-involvement" in our kids' progress. Parents need to convert their anxiety into "positive parenting" and encourage a child's "intrinsic motivation." Parents should focus on developing children's autonomy, their confidence in their own abilities. This doesn't mean letting them do whatever they want; in fact, parents need to stay involved and connected with what the child is doing. Parents must also provide the structure a child needs to exercise competence, and Grolnick and Seal provide plenty of tips on better ways to handle those inevitable times when competitive anxiety threatens a parent's better judgment. Written by a naturopath (Zand), a medical doctor (Allan Spreen), and a registered pharmacist (James B. LaValle), this book demonstrates how conventional and alternative medicine can work together to provide optimum health. The first part of the book describes different treatment modalities--conventional medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathy, acupressure, Bach flower remedies, aromatherapy, nutrition, and nutritional supplements--and how they work. Part 2 provides an alphabetical listing of common health problems, ranging from athlete's foot to vertigo. Each entry includes a brief description of the ailment and treatment recommendations. The third section covers therapies and procedures, from locating acupressure points and doing breast self-examination to relaxation techniques and preparing herbal treatments. The book concludes with product information. Aside from too few illustrations, this book is flawless. Highly recommended for mid- and large-sized libraries as well as smaller libraries wishing to increase holdings in this genre.--Valeria Long, Amberg Health Sciences Lib., Grand Rapids, MI Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

    Kirkus Reviews

A particularly comprehensive, well-laid-out addition to the spate of recent guides to medical and alternative health resources. This covers conventional medicine, herbal medicine, homeopathy, Bach flower remedies, acupressure, aromatherapy, and therapeutic nutritional measures. Naturopath Zand (also trained in Oriental medicine and acupuncture), physician Spreen (whose particular interest is nutrition as therapy), and pharmacologist LaValle explain the history and philosophy underlying each therapeutic modality. Dr. Edward Bach's system of flower remedies originated at the turn of the century, for instance, on the theory that "physical problems were secondary to emotional problems—that physical illness was a manifestation of emotional imbalance.". Then, for each of an exhaustive list of ills—ranging in severity from black eyes to melanoma—the authors provide comprehensive suggestions for help. For instance, Lyme and other tick-borne diseases must be treated by conventional medicine with antibiotics first of all, but dietary measures will help (high fluid intake, plenty of well-cooked whole grains and fresh vegetables), calcium and magnesium supplements may help relieve achiness; and possible herbal supports include cat's claw, garlic, goldenseal, and oregano. There are appropriate cautions throughout—these together with the wealth of possibilities make clear the need for the assistance of a knowledgeable health practitioner. Thorough and understandable, this is a useful all-purpose reference. (First printing of 100,000; $250,000 ad/promo)

Having a baby can and should be one of the most joyful experiences of a woman's life. Yet many women find themselves suffering from a variety of ailments during the postpartum period -- not just the "baby blues," but also fatigue, backaches, digestive trouble, sleep problems, allergies, anxiety, and loss of libido.

The good news is that postpartum difficulties are not inevitable. A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health explains how most common postpartum problems actually result from nutrient depletion and hormonal imbalance, and how you can prevent or treat them with a simple program to bring your body back into its correct balance. Principal elements of the program include dietary changes, nutritional supplementation, exercise, hormone balancing, use of medicinal herbs, restoration of digestive health, and, if needed, appropriate medication. Also included are sections on the effects of breastfeeding, sleep deprivation, emotional stress, and other subjects related to pregnancy and the postpartum period. Throughout, discussions are highlighted by the real-life stories of mothers who have experienced postpartum difficulties -- and overcome them.

Developed by the authors in clinical practice, the program offered in this book has a proven track record in helping mothers provide for their own nourishment and nurturing during a physically and emotionally demanding time.

The Cult of Thinness or Iron Yoga

    The Cult of Thinness

    Author: Sharlene Nagy Hesse Biber

Whether they are rich or poor, liberal or conservative, religious or atheist, thriving or stagnant, most American women have one thing in common--they want to be thin--or thinner. And they are willing to go to extraordinary lengths to get that way, even to the point of starving themselves. Why are America's women so preoccupied with weight? Is there more to this preoccupation than weight alone? What has caused record numbers of young women--even before they reach their teenage years--to suffer from weight obsession, poor body image, and disordered eating? Why are some young women able to resist cultural pressures to be thin when others are not? Are there factors within American society that have fueled current outbreaks of anorexia and bulimia? The Cult of Thinness, Second Edition--a revised and expanded version of Sharlene Nagy Hesse-Biber's award-winning book, Am I Thin Enough Yet? (OUP, 1996)--answers these questions and more.
Hesse-Biber goes beyond traditional psychological explanations of eating disorders to level a powerful indictment against the social, political, and economic pressures women face in a weight-obsessed society--a society that is, ironically, becoming increasingly more fat while worshipping a progressively more thin ideal. She examines the profit motives of corporate America that promote this paradox. Moreover, a new chapter on preteens, masculinity, ethnicity, gay and lesbian body image, and the globalization of body image issues align a refined cultural study of body image with the trends found in current research studies, demographic data, and popular culture.
Using the metaphor of a cult, Hesse-Biber conveys the intense, day-to-day involvementthat the pursuit of thinness demands. Examining the testimonies of young women concerning the practice of body rituals, she observes the extent to which these women sacrifice their bodies and minds to the pursuit of the ultra-slender ideal. She looks at pressures coming from their families and friends that perpetuate their cult-like practices and evaluates a range of therapies and personal and collective actions available to help women overcome their weight obsessions and eating problems.
Hesse-Biber provides new frameworks for envisioning femininity and personal power, overcoming body insecurity, strengthening the inner self, and changing the cultural environment itself. Along the way, the reader is provided with important self-help tips to tackle the growing number of body image issues young women and new recruits to the "Cult of Thinness" continue to encounter.
There are alternatives to the Cult of Thinness and this book provides a strong antidote.

The Spiritual Self: Reflections on Recovery and God

    Author: Abraham J Twerski

Much is made of spirituality these days-in recovery and in the culture at large-but what, exactly, does spirituality mean? Is it something different to different people? How is it discovered, nurtured, expressed? And, perhaps most important, why does it matter? To the thicket of questions surrounding the subject, this book brings a clear vision and a thoughtful approach that will help us find our way to the very heart of spirituality. Writing simply and directly, Abraham Twerski shows how spirituality-independent of religion-is central to emotional and mental health, and is a key to being truly and profoundly human.

Founder and medical director of the Gateway Rehabilitation Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Abraham J. Twerski is a rabbi, psychiatrist, chemical dependency counselor, and the author of many books, including Addictive Thinking: Understanding Self-Deception.
